Can LED lamps be dimmed?
Yes all LED lights can be dimmed. By varying the current passing through the chip the light emitted varies. Therefore it is important that the driver used is designed for dimming.
Replacement lamps can be found that dim perfectly even with intelligent lighting systems, even LED tubes nowadays. Light fittings with an integral driver can be found that dim by 1-10V, DALI and trailing edge. For LED lights with an external driver it is just a matter of choosing the correct driver depending on the kind of dimming necessary.
Can LED single colour Strips be dimmed?
Yes. LED strips are powered by a power supply (12VDC or 24VDC). Till very recently the only way one could dim LED strips (single colour) was with a specific DMX controller. The issue here rose when an intelligent lighting system was being considered since normally intelligent lighting systems work on 1-10V or DALI. To go with DMX would add extra unnecessary cost.
This problem has been solved since now special power supplies are being developed which accept a dimming signal 1-10V or DALI, resulting in no extra expenses for a DMX controller and most of all a simpler installation.
How can I control LED RGB Strips?
Yes. As mentioned above for single colour strip dimming, till very recently the only way RGB could be controlled is by DMX controllers. This is because RGB colour changing was an offshoot from stage lighting and normal control system in stage lighting is DMX. Now power supplies and controllers are being designed specifically for these RGB LED strips, having an input control of 1-10V or DALI. This aids a lot in intelligent lighting control systems.
